Alan Berkowitz is an independent consultant who helps colleges, universities, public health agencies, the military and communities design programs that address health and social justice issues. He is a co-founder of social norms approach and is the Founding Editor of The Report on Social Norms. Dr. Berkowitz has received awards from the American College Health Association, the American College Personnel Association, and the Network of Colleges and Universities Committed to the Elimination of Alcohol and Drug Abuse for his work in the areas of violence prevention, drug prevention, and prejudice reduction and for the development of innovative prevention programs on these subjects, including the social norms approach. He speaks and consults frequently on the topic of the social norms approach as a drug prevention and violence prevention strategy, has published extensively about it, and has been an external consultant for over five successful social norms campaigns. Currently he serves as Subject Matter Expert for all five branches of the military on the topic of sexual harassment and sexual assault prevention.
