This week’s CDC Vital Signs reports that alcohol poisoning kills around 6 people every day in the U.S. Alcohol poisoning, usually resulting from high-intensity binge drinking, can shut down parts of the brain that control breathing and other vital body functions. The report points out that most of these deaths are in white men, age 35 to 64. However, a disproportionate share of deaths are among American Indian/Alaska Natives.

This report reminds us of the importance of our work in promoting safe alcohol consumption behaviors among youth and young adults. The benefits of assisting these young people to develop healthier habits around alcohol go well beyond their high school or college years. It may ultimately save their lives.

For more on evidence-based community programs to reduce binge drinking, see the CDC Community Guide.
