This month in the Digest several authors report on health literacy initiatives (Duren-Winfield, et al.; Meppelink & Bol; Nouri & Rudd; Yamashita & Kunkel). Health communication campaigns and/or interventions, some yielding evidence of behavior change, are also detailed (Knowlden, et al.; Schwinn, et al.; Willoughby & Furberg).
Health message design considerations (Asbeek Brusse, et al.; King; Long, et al.; Nelson, et al.; Oh & Sundar), including the role of “audience engagement” (Colliander, et al; Diez-Canseco, et al.), are the focus of many writers. New media, health, and adult audience segments are examined in three studies (Hall, et al.; Hill, et al.; Kammerer, et al.).
Several studies explore emerging topics including scientific uncertainty and risk-reducing behaviors (Kim, et al.), cross-platform synergies for message efficacy (Lim, et al.), communicative social capital (Matsaganis & Wilkin), and the impact of mixed-message blogs on HPV vaccine related beliefs (Nan & Daily).
