Longhorns Against Drunk Driving (LADD)

Funding

This project is funded by a grant from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, administered by the Texas Department of Transportation.

Objectives

To correct misperceptions of actual alcohol use rates and create campus norms that reinforce and enhance safety through decreased drinking and driving.

Baseline Data and Primary Normative Messages

Baseline data was gathered in spring 2000 using a survey developed by the UT-Austin Health Service. Based on the data, two messages were developed:
  • 7 out of 10 UT Students Don't Drink and Drive
  • 7 out of 10 UT Students Drink 0-3 Drinks When Partying

Marketing Methods Employed

  • Campus newspaper ads
  • On-campus television ads
  • Bill stuffers
  • Mall Displays
  • Posters
  • Public service announcements on radio

Evaluation

Data collected in March 2002 will be compared to baseline data to determine if decreases in misperceptions and alcohol usage patterns have occurred due to the social norm intervention.
