Established in 2016 at Michigan State University, the NSNC was formerly known as the National Social Norms Institute (NSNI), where it was housed for ten years at the University of Virginia. The center originated in 2003 at Northern Illinois University as the National Social Norms Resource Center, founded via a generous grant from the Anheuser-Busch Foundation, a primary sponsor of the NSNC still today.
The NSNC has been affiliated with and provided grand funding for several universities that develop and implement social norms campaigns to promote safer behaviors related to alcohol.
The NSNC offers fee-based consultation and assistance for schools, communities, and organizations interested in designing, implementing, or evaluating a social norms intervention. Our services range from brief programmatic and statistical consultations to more comprehensive consultations tailored to meet the unique needs of each organization, including campaign design and implementation.
